What to wear for Newborn Photo Session
After your maternity session, you are likely in full nesting mode. I remember it, excitedly waiting for your baby to arrive home. Creating that peacful nursery. This is the perfect time to start preparing for your newborn session, and thankfully, it does not have to be complicated.
Let’s start with wardrobe.
Soft colors and neutrals always photograph best during newborn sessions. Since you will be holding your baby close, we want to avoid bold colors that can cast unwanted tones onto your baby’s skin. Creams, beige, muted pastels, and earthy tones are always my favorite choices. Some of my favorite stores to shop at for newborn clothes are Zara, Carters, and Boutiques or just simple onesies you can find anywhere.

Most moms feel most comfortable in a loose blouse, cozy knit sweater, or a soft, stretchy dress. Comfort matters, especially during those early newborn days. Choose something that makes you feel relaxed and beautiful without being restrictive. Textures always photograph beautifully as well.

For baby, plan to have more than one outfit ready — spit up happens! Always choose newborn-sized clothing whenever possible. Sizes labeled 0–3 months are often too large for fresh newborns and can look baggy in photos. Simple, snug outfits photograph best because we truly want to capture your baby, not overwhelm them with clothing.
A swaddle is always a great idea to have ready as well. Don’t worry if you are unsure what works best — I can absolutely help with this. I also bring a selection of swaddles and newborn clothing options with me to sessions.
If older siblings are joining in, keep their outfits neutral or coordinating with the rest of the family. Simple textures and soft colors work wonderfully together. For toddlers, diaper covers are always helpful to have on hand.
And if we are photographing your session in-home, shoes are definitely not necessary.
