One of the most common questions I get as a Roswell photographer is:
“What if my child is shy during our session?”
First — take a deep breath.
Shy isn’t a problem. It’s a personality trait. And it photographs beautifully.
1. You’ll Get the Best Images by Letting Them Be Themselves
Some of my favorite images are the quiet ones. A toddler is being held by mom. Small arms are wrapped tightly around her neck. The eyes observe the world before deciding it’s safe.
When we allow children to show up exactly as they are, the images feel real. Honest. Connected.
The photo of a little boy tucked into his mom’s shoulder? That’s not a warm-up shot. That’s the story.
As a Marietta and Roswell family photographer, I don’t expect children to perform. I capture them — whether they’re cautious, cuddly, bold, or bursting with personality.
And here’s the beautiful part: once they feel safe, their personality always comes through.

2. Patience Changes Everything
If your child tends to be shy, I always recommend choosing a full session rather than a mini. Minis are wonderful — but they move quickly. Shy kids thrive when there’s no rush.
Stranger danger is very real for little ones. I expect it.
We start slow. I let them stay in mom or dad’s arms. I photograph the cuddles. I talk gently. I might ask them to “help” me. Shy children often love guidance and reassurance — and I know exactly how to give that.
(Truthfully? I used to be the shy kid.)
Within minutes, they usually begin to open up. And when they do — the joy, the personality, the sparkle — it feels earned. And genuine.

As a Roswell family photographer serving the greater Atlanta area, I am known for my patience with little ones and my ability to help families feel comfortable in front of the camera. There is no pressure. No forcing smiles. Just connection, guidance, and time.
If you’re worried your child won’t “cooperate,” I promise — we will create something beautiful anyway. Reach out to schedule Audrey Alexander Photography to capture your family exactly who they are. AudreyAlexanderPhotography@gmail.com
